old man roo returns

Back to: Surviving the Devil: A Song of Fire
Poem #12 from the ‘Surviving the Devil’ collection (unpublished)

the kangaroo is back

we call him old man roo
and I first bumped into him
in the back yard
a few years ago

didn’t think of him at the time
but when I was crawling out
through the smoke and the flames
I assumed he was dead
like the rest of the wildlife
around here

then yesterday morning
he was there again
beside the water tank

so I scrounged around
asked the neighbours
if they had anything left
and got hold of a small bale
of lucerne hay

I’m feeding him now

there’s no need for any of us
to do it tougher
than we have to
