Frenk you should be here
I’m making k-nedl-e
do you remember
what they are
dumplings for putting into chicken supa
sounds good ma
but what I always remember
from when I was a kid
is shoof-nudl-e
the yellow doughy-pastry that you used to make
into long thin ropes
by rolling it backwards and forwards fast
on your knee in the laundry
she laughed
don’t be silly Frenki
that was a joke I did once
for you children
shoof-nudl-e are rolled on a pastry board
you funny boy
supa is ready
do you want some
I wish you were here
goodbye now

Hi Ali.
It was telephone conversation when I’d long left home, a clarification of joke that I never worked out when I was kid.
One of those moments that made me long to be back at home and in my young days.
Cheers,
Frank

Sometimes memories like this one tug hard, don’t they? And from a parent’s point of view too!

Yep, they sure do.
There was another piece in the series about hearing european accented voices when walking the streets of Melbourne – another great tug.
Cheers,

My grandmother used to make sour beef and dumplings. It was banging! The whole family loved it…even the friends of the family loved it. They were potato based dumplings though that were about tennis ball to baseball size. The sour beef is what really made it delicious for me.

Hi Kurtis. Thanks for stopping by.
Yes, some of those old traditional meals just do something to the mind and become a transport back to a previous time, don’t they?
Glad you enjoyed the piece and delighted you have similar good memories.
Cheers,
Frank

Yeah, they definitely take you back. I have to start trying to learn how to make the recipe. I’d like to continue the memories and the tradition.

You have a way of getting the readers attention, the title and yes the words. Thanks I like it so much and remind me of my mom too.

Thanks Vinneve.
It’s a very nostalgic thing to be reminded of home through food.
Glad you enjoyed.

Aw, this is so sweet. If not fictional, then I know she was smiling when she hung up, and I hope you were, too.
