of strangers

Back to: Surviving the Devil – A Song of Fire
Poem #3 from the ‘Surviving the Devil’ collection (unpublished)

a lot of the backyards
are wearing the brown signs
of singeing
but the town is still standing
and every one of us is alive
thanks to strangers

who’ve come from one hundred
two hundred
they’ve come from three hundred miles
to look after us

we’re dazed and disoriented
with heatstroke and fire-blight
smoke haze and embers
bush burning and tear streaks

we’re alive
thanks to the good strong heart
of strangers

  1. too often if were not for the help of the strangers, the volunteers, those who just step up and in and come to the aid of those most in need …. the unsung heroes of the day
